Bakersfield (Burt Lancaster Burt Lancaster) is the general manager of Lincoln Airport, whose busy work always puts his family at the back of his life, leading his neglected wife Cindy (Dana Winter Dana Wynter) to leave. While Bakersfield's marriage suffered a devastating blow, there was an unprecedented crisis in his career, when one plane broke down on the runway, preventing other planes from taking off, and to make matters worse, a terrorist detonated a bomb on another plane, causing serious damage to the plane and having to use it to land, or else the plane would be destroyed. With the help of aircraft expert Patroni (George Kennedy George Kennedy), Bakersfield not only successfully resolved the crisis with amazing courage and wisdom, but also started a romance with his female aides.
