1935, Venice, Carnival Night. A small boat came slowly from the water and docked on the stone bank. Two doctors in white coats, several men in black and a middle-aged man in masks got off the boat. They filed into an old restaurant, dressed a woman with schizophrenia in a white straitjacket and tied her to a stretcher. The woman is Agnes, a Swedish writer; the man in the mask is her husband, David Sprengel. David and his party ignored Agnes' struggles and shouts. They also put a mask on her and carried her back to the boat. The boat slowly rocked away from the shore, and they would take her to a mental hospital on a small island. Agnes was released from her restraints and sent to the ward. David also lived in a house next to her. As soon as Agnes entered the hospital, she kept asking for her "baby." she was referring to the manuscript of a novel she had just finished, which David took away. Two doctors knocked on David's door and almost snatched it back and returned it to Agnes; they hoped it would alleviate her illness. But Agnes seems to have completely fallen into.
