Animals (2019)

Future writer Holliday Grainger and her roommate beauty Alia Shawkat have a messy apartment in Dublin with a craving for wine, jasmine and one-night stands. However, when Laura fell in love with Fra Fee, a charming but reserved classical pianist, Taylor worried that the party might be over soon. Animals, adapted from Emma Jane Aunsworth's 2014 novel of the same name, tells the bittersweet story of the growth and separation of two friends. Sophie Hyde, whose debut "52 Tuesdays" won the best director award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, examined the controversial friendship with a refreshing and dispassionate eye, following Laura and Taylor, who experienced the best part of hedonism and the trough of exploring the soul. Shawket's live performance gives Taylor an anarchist comic edge, perfectly complementing Greg's soul turn as a conflict and creatively blocking Laura. The pair were supported by a star lineup, including dreamy drug suitors Dermot Murphy and Gray.
