The story takes place in St. Peter in the 19th century. Anna (Greta Garbo Greta Garbo) marries her husband Karenin (basil Resborne Basil Rathbone), who has a distinguished background. Although she lives a life of rich food and clothing, there is no love between Anna and her husband. A heart eager to nourish gradually wither in the sleepy life day after day. After that, Anna meets a handsome officer named Wallensky (Frederick March Fredric March). Wallensky's presence ignites a fire in Anna's heart, and she is burning, desperate to devote herself to a relationship that is not allowed by the ethics of the world.
