The story takes place in England in 1930. Guy Bennett (Rupert Everett Rupert Everett), who attended the Eton aristocratic School, is gay, and his good friend Judd (Colin Firth Colin Firth) is a communist who hates capitalism and is dismissive of school rules and regulations. Homosexuality spread at school, and Martino hanged himself after a student named Martino was found having sex with another male classmate. The incident had a big impact on Guy and the whole college. Soon after, Guy falls in love with his school mate James (Gary Elvis Cary Elwes), and the two often date at night. One day, however, it came to light that Guy accepted the whipping alone in order to protect James, and his position of supreme seniority was replaced. Strict school rules and conservative morality made him disappointed with the future of his career in England. Twenty years later, Gay defected from the British Foreign Office to the communist Soviet Union and became a "traitor", causing a sensation in the British government and opposition. This film is originally a sensational British stage play, based on real people in the 1930s.
