Indonesia has long said that the five people were killed in an exchange of fire between Indonesian soldiers and independent fighters. Although this explanation has been strongly dissatisfied with the families of the deceased, the Australian side has never questioned this statement for the sake of maintaining relations between the two countries. Australia's silence on the matter was broken only two years ago. A coroner in New South Wales found that five journalists were deliberately killed by Indonesian special forces fighters on the order of Captain Yunus Yosfiah to prevent them from disclosing Indonesia's actions against Pakistan.
