The Ballad of the Soldier is a documentary filmed by director Herzog in Miskito territory in northeastern Nicaragua. The Miskito are Central American Indians whose territory extends from Cape Cameron in Honduras to the Rio Grande in Nicaragua. For historical reasons (see Wikipedia), the Miskito never thought of themselves as under the control of the Nicaraguan government, and many Miskito still do not consider themselves Nicaraguans. In the 1970s and 1980s, attempts by the Sandinist Government to commit genocide, including the forced relocation of 8500 Miskito and the destruction of more than 100 villages, prompted the Misskitos, together with the Sumu and Rama tribes, to form an anti-government guerrilla group, MISURASTA, and allied with the opposition (Contras) of the Sandinista Government of Nicaragua.
