Call Me Kuchu (2012)
Uganda's first gay film, "my name of suffering," which was funded by the United States, revolves around the country's gay rights activist David Kato. The primary school teacher has been working to change Uganda's gay death penalty law. Local publications published the names and photos of 100 homosexuals, including him, calling on the public to "execute them." Kato sued the Supreme Court and won the tort case, but he died a few days later under the axe of his haters. The film not only reflects the state of gay existence in Uganda, but also explores the democratic dilemma of African countries: why can draconian laws aimed at depriving minorities of their lives and dignity be passed by a majority in Parliament? Won the teddy bear award for best documentary at the Berlin Film Festival. ◎ QAF
