Dostoevsky's literary masterpiece has been put on the screen many times, and this edition has moved it to Helsinki today. The protagonist is a slaughterhouse worker who has studied law (like our butcher shop owner of Peking University). His girlfriend was killed by a car three years ago and the driver escaped. Now he has found the perpetrator and killed him. There was a woman who knew his truth and his identity, but instead of turning him in, she fell into a dead-end relationship with him. As a literary film, this film is not faithful, but it realistically reproduces the oppression and gloom of the original work, the characterization of few emotional colors, many details are abandoned, leaving only the eyes and movements of the main characters, can be called minimalist style. The American version of Crime and punishment in 1935 is not of high overall standard, but there is no lack of new ideas; the French version of 1958 moved the plot to Paris and later renamed "the most dangerous Crime"; and the new American version of 1959 was also updated. it tells that a law student is involved in crimes such as robbery and murder. The 1969 Soviet version is 3 hours and 20 minutes long, which is closer to the original; the 2002 British TV version is another version that is famous for faithful reproduction. -- Zhengtai Cat
