After the defeat in Japan, Makada (Chiao Shimura) is a poor community doctor who likes to drink alcohol. He is good at treating tuberculosis. One day the mafia leader Songyong (Mifune Toshiro is acted the role of) because of the injury on his hand to find him for treatment, who knows by the real field to see the symptoms of tuberculosis. He advised Songyong to take an X-ray, but Songyong did not want to accept the fact that he was ill, but scolded Makata and quarreled. However, after Songyong went back, the symptoms became more and more serious. After taking pictures, it was proved that it was indeed tuberculosis. He was brave enough to accept the treatment of Makita. However, Matsumoto's underworld eldest brother Okada (Risaburo Yamamoto) comes out of prison, he gradually takes the place of Matsumoto in the gang and has everything, the terminally ill Matsumoto can only put all his eggs in one basket.
