The show, adapted from Thomas Mallon's novel of the same name, contains love stories and political thrillers, documenting the fickle romance between two very different men after they met in the shadow of Washington in the McCarthy era. Their relationship began at a time when Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohen declared war on "subversive elements" and "perverts", opening one of the darkest periods in American history in the 20th century. Over the past 40 years, Hawkins and Tim have converged on a variety of occasions-the Vietnam War protests in the 1960s, disco hedonism in the 1970s, and the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, while they faced obstacles from the world and themselves.
