Tom Cubik (James Karwiese James Caviezel), the husband of Claire Cubik (Ashley Judd Ashley Judd), a strong woman lawyer in San Francisco, is suddenly captured by FBI and sent to a military court near Los Angeles to stand trial in secret on charges of killing nine civilians while serving in El Salvador. Shocked Claire leaves his job and comes to Los Angeles and hires Charles Grimes (Morgan Freeman Morgan Freeman), a local military court lawyer, to defend Tom with Lieutenant Embry (Adam Scott Adam Scott), a young defense lawyer appointed by the military. The investigation and collection of evidence of the three men were blocked by the military, and even Claire's personal safety was seriously threatened. Claire and Grimes, who firmly believed in their husband's innocence, did their best, only to find that the truth behind the case was far more complicated than people had imagined.
