Mario (Massimo Trosi Massimo Troisi) is the son of a fisherman. He doesn't like the sea, but he becomes a postman, specializing in sending letters on the island. The island is inhabited by Chilean poet Neruda (Philip Novare Philippe Noiret) and his wife. Neruda was exiled here, he is good at writing poetry, brilliant. Mario sends and receives many letters from Neruda every day. In frequent contact, Mario worships the poet more and more, and he is keen to discuss and study poetry with Neruda. When he fell in love with the beautiful girl on the island, Mario often confided in Neruda, and finally touched the girl's heart with a poem, and the two married. Until Neruda left the island, Mario persisted in his love of poetry. He continued to write poetry and was about to read it at a workers' rally, but he suffered an unexpected disaster.
