Zannusi's early masterpiece, which opened the door to international cinema, is famous for its complicated and alienated forms and introspective propositions. Through the process of falling in love, dropping out of school, escaping from the world and returning to the system, the hero, who is bent on studying in the physics department of a well-known university, continues to explore conflicts and dialectics in life, spirit, and thought, and walks on the basis of spirit and reality, freedom and responsibility. It not only reflects the mood of the young Polish intellectuals at that time, but also establishes the inner theme of Zannusi's future works.
