It's a Girl (2012)

In India, China and many other parts of the world today, girls are killed, aborted and abandoned just because they are girls. The United Nations estimates that as many as 200 million girls are missing in the world today as a result of this so-called "gender extinction". Girls who survive in infancy are often neglected and many grow up to face extreme violence or even death by their husbands or other family members. The war against girls is rooted in centuries of tradition and is supported by deep-rooted cultural dynamics combined with government policies to accelerate the process of eliminating girls. Filmed at locations in India and China, this is a girl, revealing the problem. It asked why this happened and why little work had been done to protect girls and women. The film tells the story of abandoned and trafficked girls, women who suffered extreme dowry-related violence, heroic mothers who fought to save their daughters' lives, and other mothers killed for their sons. Global experts and grass-roots activists put these stories in the background, advocating different paths of change, while collectively lamenting the lack of any truly effective action to deal with this injustice.
