In Jesus of Montreal of Montreal (1989), Denys Arcand criticizes the crime of mass communication by satirizing the crucifixion of Jesus. In the film, Karen, a young and unknown actor, is invited by the church deacon to form an impromptu troupe with four other people to perform the church's "Passion play" every summer in a modern way. The original script was very simple, with only a few lines recited in a narrative way: "Jesus was sentenced to death, and the upright will die for our sins."
