In 1998, documentary director Eric (Thor Lindhart Thure Lindhardt) met Paul (Zachary Booth Zachary Booth), a lawyer who didn't come out in an one-night stand, and the two finally began a long-distance relationship after a decade of on-off and on-off love. When Eric found out that Paul had a habit of using drugs, he didn't reject it and occasionally shared it, but Paul's addiction gradually got out of control. When Eric won an international award but couldn't find a lover to share his documentary, and when he saw his boyfriend drowned in drugs and male prostitutes in a hotel, Eric painfully realized that his love for Paul was as helpless as a drug addiction. Every quarrel, every compromise, every pull is overdrawing and hurting each other, until forgiveness can no longer stop the tears. "Lighting up" was named the saddest love film of the year, entered the main competition unit of Sundance and won the Teddy Bear Award at the 62nd Berlin Film Festival. The film is like a sentimental picture and a love letter that laughs and forgets, delicately and truly depicting all kinds of sweetness and pain in the gay world. Director Ella Sachs used to be known as the Blue four.
