In the south of France during World War II, the tough U. S. Army Lieutenant III Logins (Frank Sinatra) and the arrogant radio operator Britt AHarris (Tony Curtis) both set their sights on French girl Monique Blair (Natalie Wood). When he learned that Blair's father was black and she was a hybrid, the two were caught in conflict because of race. Lieutenant Sanlokins overcame the underlying bias, but Harris did not. Three Logins lost an arm in the battle, and after the war, he came to Blair.
