Set in the first World War, the film tells the story of three French prisoners escaping from a German concentration camp. Three French pilots were shot down by the Germans during a mission, and Bodeo, Mike and Rosenthal were taken to a prisoner of war camp. Bodeo and Rothstein, the German warden, were of aristocratic origin and shared political views, and they became friends in prison. The three men later found that their cellmates were planning an escape, and they dug a way to escape. Mike and Rosenthal also joined the dig. Finally, they escaped from prison collectively, and the Germans made an all-out manhunt. During the escape, Bodeo was knocked down by Roffenstein, and two French captives, Mike and Rosenthal, fled to the home of a German peasant woman. With her help, they fled to Switzerland after all kinds of twists and turns. This film is one of the earliest prison break films, was rated as one of the greatest "prison break movies", but also director Jean Renoir's anti-war masterpiece.
