In 1939, David, an unemployed British youth, like many socialist youth from all over the world, joined the guerrillas of an international organization to fight against Franco's dictatorship in the Spanish Civil War for democracy and freedom. David came to Barcelona because he was injured, and the tragic cry in the pool of blood during the war became a lingering nightmare. He found himself swaying between his loyalty to socialism and his new lover, but his dream of reform did not diminish slightly because he was far away from the battlefield, and finally chose to return to his comrade-in-arms at the front. This film has been nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival, best foreign language film at the Caesar Award in France, and best film at the European Film Festival.
