On the eve of World War II, Yorkshire, England. Affected by the turbulent times, the life of the lower classes in Europe is difficult. Miner Sam (John Lynch John Lynch) and his wife Sarah (Samantha Morton Samantha Morton) have been living an extremely difficult life. However, Sam, who is responsible for the family life, still lost his only job. Their son Joe (Jonathan Mason Jonathan Mason) is beaten by his teacher at school, and his only consolation is his beloved friend Lacey. However, in order to make ends meet, Sam has to sell Lacey to the Duke of Rudrin (played by Peter Otto Peter O'Toole). Joe, who lost Lacey, was very sad, and so was his mother, Sarah. Lacey, who misses Joe, also sneaks out of the duke's house several times, but the honest Sam family gives it back every time. Finally, the Duke will return to live as far away as Scotland with his granddaughter, and Lacey will be taken with him.
