During an afternoon recording in Chicago in the 1920s, the atmosphere became increasingly tense as band members waited for the pioneering performer and legendary "mother of the blues" Marini (played by Oscar winner Viola Davis). In the later stages of the recording, the intrepid and hot-tempered Ma fought a battle of will with her white agent and producer over her music control. Ambitious trumpeter Levi (Chadwick Bosman) admires Ma's girlfriend and is determined to have a place in the music industry. When the band waits in the studio's claustrophobic rehearsal room, he urges the musicians to reveal the truth, which will change their lives forever. Based on a play by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Auguste Wilson, the blues diva celebrates the transformative power of blues and artists who refuse to let social prejudice dictate their values. The film is directed by George Ulf and adapted by Reuben Santiago Hudson, with Academy Award nominees Denzel Washington and Todd Blake as producers.
