Maria's mother died when she was fifteen, and the burden of taking care of the whole family fell on her. Because of her strong desire for control, Maria has always been proud of her position at home. But when she learned that her father had fallen in love with the nurse who took care of him and suddenly announced her engagement, Maria felt that her life was falling apart. So she was willing to fall, farther and farther away from her writer's dream. She wanted to work for her family in other ways, only to find that her father no longer needed her and that her life had been stagnant, and she realized it was time for a change.
