Ellis (Ty Sheridan Tye Sheridan), a 14-year-old who lives on the Mississippi River, and his friend Naik find an abandoned boat on an island in the middle of the river, as well as a mysterious homeless man living on the boat, Madd (Matthew McConaughey Matthew McConaughey). Mudd claimed to have lived here as a child and asked Eisley and Naik for help because he was unable to move. Ellis, whose family is on the verge of falling apart, trusts Mad instinctively, provides him with food and learns about the past of his childhood sweetheart Jennifer (Reese Witherspoon Reese Witherspoon), who is trying to take away Jennifer while avoiding bounty hunters on a lonely island. Ellis is willing to believe in Mudd's love, although life is full of disappointments, he is willing to give his strange friend a helping hand.
