Oberst Redl (1985)
Based on real events and influenced by John Osborne's novels, the film describes an Austrian soldier who climbs by any means and finally destroys himself on the eve of World War I. Colonel Rydell came from a poor, Jewish and gay family, all of which he needed to disguise in order to rise in the army of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. But no matter how much he suppresses his true self, some people still regard him as an outsider who rashly intrudes into other people's world.
