In 1916, in France during World War I, the war between the German and French armies was in full swing. At this critical moment, French Army General Blauard (Adolphe Menjou) gives an order to the troops led by Army Captain Dax (Kirk Douglas Kirk Douglas): take the German-occupied Mount Ante at all costs. The army was like a mountain of orders, and even though there was a sea of fire in front of them, the soldiers still rushed forward desperately. It is conceivable that under the intense fire of the enemy, the French charge failed and suffered heavy casualties. In order to cover up his command mistakes, Blodard arrested three innocent soldiers as scapegoats and sentenced them to death for escaping from battle and other charges. Captain Dax fought hard for the benefit of his soldiers, but in the process he gradually saw the ugliness of officers and war. Based on Humphrey Cobb's 1935 novel the Road of Glory, this film won the Best Foreign language Film Director Award of the Italian National Film critics Association Silver Belt Award in 1959 and the Best Director Award of the Finnish Academy of Film Arts Award in 1958.
