The story takes place in a small town called Rockwell in the United States in 1972. Colonel Ryder was responsible for escorting the bodies of soldiers who died in the war back to their hometown and holding military funerals there. This time, Colonel Ryder came to Rockwell and brought back the body of officer Gwitt. An elderly black couple received Rhett, Gwitt's parents. Their decision to bury Gwitt in the graveyard of the town was opposed by many local residents and the government because Gwaite was black. In the face of a hero who had to endure racial discrimination after his death, Colonel Ryder was so indignant that he was determined to change it on his own. Laird met the editor of the local newspaper through Mrs. Mcallister, who had always supported the Gwitt family, and after hard work, the editor agreed to give Rhett some time to collect and publish all of Gwitt's heroic deeds in the newspaper, in order to change the discrimination against him by the residents of the town. Colonel Ryder came to Gwitt's former unit, and in the course of questioning his men, Rhett found that all the people were praising Gwitt's bravery, but seemed to avoid talking about his sacrifice. Larry, go.
