The film is adapted from several short stories written by Gorky in his early days, and the main plot is taken from "Markal Chudra". "Markal Chudra" is a love legend of the Zegon people, which tells the life and death love and hatred between the horse thief Loyko and the proud beauty Lada. The story takes place in the Bessalabia region on the border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the late 19th century. The area between the Transnistrian and Pruit rivers belonged to Kievan Ross in the 10th-11th century, to the Principality of Moldova in the 14th century, to Turkey in the 16th century, to the Russian Empire in 1812 and to Romania in 1918-1940. After 1941 it was most of the Soviet Republic of Moldova and the southern part of Odessa, now the Republic of Moldova). The protagonists are the wandering Tzigang people, whose hard life and peculiar customs exude a bitter and warm atmosphere in Gorky's works.
