The story tells that Toda was a big family, always in high spirits, but when the head of the family died of illness, the whole family changed a lot. The wife worked hard for his death day and night, after dealing with the estate, the family went down, the son had to go to work in Tianjin, China, and the mother and the youngest daughter were forced to move to live in the homes of their children. As a result, the mother and wife were increasingly at odds with each other. The cohesion of the family gradually disintegrated with the sudden death of the father, and the mother and daughter were finally forced to hide in a shack by the sea, feeling infinitely sad and lonely. This film is a variation of "We should Love our Mother". The story starts with the death of our father, but lays out another kind of emotion and care. The film is one of Ozu's most mature works and is sensitive to dealing with the broken relationships of three generations in the same house. The opening of the rich family is high-spirited, compared with the bleak situation at the end of the film, and the feeling of disillusionment is especially real and strong. It shows Ozu's strong and mature personal style. It was chosen as the best film of the year by Japan's Movie Daily.
