Although the small town of Norway, Iowa, has only 586 residents, the local high school baseball team is famous throughout the state, winning 19 state championships in 26 years and winning the love of the whole town. As the head coach of the Tigers, Jim van Scoyoke (Booth Booth) witnessed the succession of the team year after year, the championship trophies passed down from generation to generation, and Norway is famous for its abundance of baseball players. But in 1991, the Norway Board of Education decided to merge Norway Middle School into a larger high school in Madison, meaning that Norway High School would be closed forever and the town's baseball tradition would be destroyed. Despite the outcry throughout the town, the deaf-mute town government refused to renew his contract with coach Jim van Scoyoke, instead bringing in Kent Stoke (Sean Austin), a former women's volleyball coach, to lead the team for the final season.
