The Great White Silence (1924)
The classic British documentary of 1924 truly records the legendary expedition led by Captain Scott to the British Antarctic Expedition nearly a hundred years ago. This film is visualized for the first time, and BFI has been digitally repaired. Scott joined official photographer Terranova and cinematographer Herbert Ponting on board, as well as his images for nearly a hundred years. Pangting filmed almost every part of the great expedition: scientific work, living in camps and local wildlife-including the distinctive El-Adli penguins. Most importantly, Ponting documented preparations for the Antarctic expedition: experiments from caterpillar tracks to sledges, clothing and cooking equipment, years later, until he was re-edited into the present film in 1924, with distinct coloring and coloring. The expedition film to be preserved by the Royal Archives in 2010 has been restored with the latest digital technology and photochemical color complexity, recreating the glorious landscape that was examined in detail that year. This includes scenes such as Scott and his team showing how they cook and sleep in their pole tents.
