The film is written by Brian Currie and Pete Jones, co-writers of Farell and the Green Book, and is adapted from the documentary book The Greatest Beer Run Ever: A True Story of Friendship Stronger Than War, which tells the true story of John "Chickie" Donohue: during the Vietnam War, in 1967, Donohue, a 26-year-old former U.S. Marine, set out from New York to find three childhood friends who were in the army and bring them beer.
