Directed by Mark Robson, the background is during the Anti-Japanese War in China. Grady (Ingrid Bergman), a British maid, wants to join a missionary mission in China, but is refused to join the mission because of her qualifications. Grady did not give up the idea and came to China from the Trans-Siberian Railway to preach and help in Leofoo Hotel. At this time is the Japanese invasion of China, GE met the Sino-German mixed-race captain Lin (Kade Juergis is acted the role of). Lin, an intelligence officer of the Kuomintang, advised GE to return to Britain, while GE refused because he was a Chinese citizen. The latter two fell in love, but current events were not allowed for them to consider. Fifty orphans were brought by missionaries in Xichang. Dr. Jamison was going to withdraw the orphans to the rear with military vehicles. GE led a hundred orphans on the road. After climbing mountains and wading through thousands of difficulties and dangers, he finally brought the orphans to Xi'an and accomplished what most people thought was impossible. This film emphasizes the anti-Japanese spirit of the Chinese people, the scene is spectacular, emotional rich and moving, people deeply immersed in it.
