In 1972, after the US military withdrew from Cambodia in a rout in Vietnam, Sidney (Sam Watson Sam Waterston), a war correspondent for the New York Times in Cambodia, stayed there to continue to cover the story. Cambodian Pan Di (Wu Hanrun Haing S. Ngor) is Sidney's local translator and assistant. With the help of Pandy, Sidney saved himself from danger many times. The two men forged a profound friendship in the midst of the flames of war. In 1975, the Khmer Rouge occupied Phnom Penh. Sidney was able to escape, but Pandy was arrested for not having a passport and began a life in hell. During the reform through labor of the Communist Party of Cambodia, Pandi witnessed the cruelty and bloodshed of the Khmer Rouge regime and received inhuman treatment. In 1978, when the Viet Cong invaded Cambodia, Pandey fled to the Thai border and was reunited with his old friend Sidney, who had been looking for him. This film won three awards: best supporting actor, best cinematography and best film editing at the 57th Academy Awards in 1985.
