The film makes up what happened in the "mysterious" five days before Ellen Poe's death. A brutal murder occurred in Baltimore in which a mother and daughter were killed at the same time, and the local police officer Emmett (Luke Evans Luke Evans) found that the killer committed the same crime in the novel of Poe (John Cusack John Cusack). Just when Poe was called to the police station for questioning, there was another murderer, with the same modus operandi and reference to his novel. After learning about the killer's method, Emmett invited Poe to act as a consultant to help solve the case. As the case goes further, Emmett finds that Ellen Poe will be the next target of this ruthless killer. When everyone is doing their best to protect the safety of Poe, the killer actually kidnapped his lover Emily (Alice Eve Alice Eve). Who is the real killer? can Poe use his own novels to unravel the game?
