Riley, originally a happy young man in Illinois, has talked about marriage with his girlfriend Isabel, along with friends Sophie, Bob and Gray who grew up together. Sophie and Bob are going to get married, while Gray loves Isabel. When the war came, Riley joined the army like other young men, although he only drove to the field hospital, but after witnessing the horror of the war, Riley's mind changed. After returning to his hometown, he repeatedly postponed his marriage to Isabel on the grounds that he had to spend time thinking about the meaning of life.
