At that time, at the end of the Pacific War, the Medical Department was under pressure and agreed to cooperate with the Japanese military to conduct a physiological autopsy of the eight captured US pilots. A discouraged Sheng Lu and his good friend Toda were recruited as assistants. At that time, it was a major problem for wartime medical care to study how much of a person's lungs were removed, how long they could still survive and how long after the heart stopped beating. So the first American captive became a living experiment and died after being tortured for an hour or twenty minutes. During the operation, the cruel Japanese officer kept joking and taking pictures, and unexpectedly put the captive's liver on the table drinking and partying. Toda, who participated in the operation, was very painful after being condemned by his conscience, while Shenglu was still immersed in fear and wandered alone.
