The Summer of Aviya (1988)

The film is based on Gila Almargo's original novel, the Summer of Avia, which truly and vividly shows life in Israel. The film is simple, rich and beautiful, reflecting the theme of the Holocaust. In the summer of 1951, the mother of boarding school student Avia took her home for the summer vacation. Avia's father died in the Holocaust and her mother was mentally ill because she was stimulated in a concentration camp. Because of her mother's long hospitalization, Avia seldom saw her mother. During the summer she spent with her mother, Avia was a mixture of joys and sorrows. Sadly, he contracted lice and was shaved and bald while his mother was spurned by her neighbors because of her illness. She was happy to live with her mother and enjoy the happiness of her family. Avia has a beautiful vision for her father whom she has never met. She believed that her father did not die, but lived somewhere else. The new neighbor, Mr. Gantz, was very friendly with his mother, and Avia thought Mr. Gantz was her father. Avia believes that a happy future awaits her, but the reality is cruel.
