ITV will produce a live-action adaptation of the Thief, wife and Canoe The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe, with Chris Lang in charge of screenwriting and Story Films production. The four-episode series tells the story of John Darwin faking his own death to defraud life insurance and avoid bankruptcy. He and his wife Anne Darwin conspired to persuade the insurance company John Darwin to disappear while going canoeing alone and received more than 250000 pounds in insurance. At that time, the heavily indebted Darwin family already had a mortgage, maxed out 13 credit cards and owed a total of 64000 yuan. At that time, Anne wanted to file for bankruptcy, but was eventually persuaded by her husband to implement this seemingly absurd plan; but the plan was successfully implemented for five years, even fooling their two sons, and John and Anne, who received insurance money, moved to Panama until John Darwin appeared in London in 2007.
