Coal miner Yongzuo (Takakura Ken) was sentenced to prison after he accidentally killed a rascal who was causing trouble. in prison, he missed his wife Guangzhi (Baisho Tieko) very much, but for fear of delaying her life and future, he offered to divorce and sincerely advised her to remarry. Before his release, Yongzuo wrote a letter to Guangzhi, saying that if she had not married someone else and was still waiting for his return, she would hang a yellow handkerchief on the flagpole in front of her home. If he could not see the yellow handkerchief, he would go far away. On the way home, Yong Zuo, worried about gain and loss, met a young couple who were driving (Takeda Tieya and Kaoru Takei) and traveled around in their car. Only after that did he pluck up the courage to return to his hometown.
