Father Finch (Gregory Parker Gregory Peck) and his sons and daughters live in the town of Meigang in the southern United States. Despite the death of his wife, the family is still happy and happy, and Finch is strict and loving to his children. Their father usually told them not to kill robins that sing for humans, because they are kind and never hurt people. Finch is not only a loving father, but also a local lawyer who has the courage to uphold justice. That day he received a rape case in which the defendant was black Robinson (Brock Pitt Brock Peters) and the victim was a white woman. In such a case, Robinson's situation was worrying in an era when racial discrimination was quite serious. Even if Finch found evidence that he did not commit a crime, it would not be enough to make people put aside racial prejudices. Finch struggled to uphold the justice of facts and laws in court, but failed to stop people's deep-rooted prejudices. To make matters worse, racially biased whites have regarded Finch as a public enemy, and Robinson cannot clear his name, and a more tragic fate awaits him.
