Japanese film director Yasujiro Ozu is a respected master in the international film arena. Many later directors in Europe, America and Asia think they are inspired and influenced by his works, and Wim Wendes of Germany is one of them. This film is a tribute to Ozu by Wim Wendes, who personally went to Japan in the mid-1980s to follow in Ozu's footsteps and recorded his feelings about the city of Tokyo in a diary. At a screening in Rome in 1903, Wendas chose Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu (1903-63)'s the Tale of Tokyo (Tokyo Monogatari, 1953) as a work that had a special influence on his film work, and triggered the idea of shooting his own version of the Tale of Tokyo. Wen declared that he did not "look for Ozu" with the mentality of a pilgrimage, even though he believed that Ozu's remaining works were most qualified to be placed in the palace of film art. The reason why he admires Ozu is that after mastering the language of films promoted by the United States and around the world, Ozu can in turn make a completely personal landscape from it; when filming something, he can keep things as they are.
