It is one of the central wholesale markets set up by the Tokyo Municipal Government. As early as the Edo era, the wholesale of fish in Tokyo was actually concentrated in the market stalls on the banks of the fish river near the Japanese bridge. When the Great Kanto earthquake occurred in 1923, the market was destroyed and had to move its position. Originally, it was only intended to borrow the Japanese naval land in Tsukiji as a temporary wholesale market, but it was fixed and officially opened in 1935.
