The film begins with a review of the first silent film about the Balkans during World War I, which depicts the lives of female textile workers. The protagonist (Harvey Keitel Harvey Keitel) is a Greek-American who returns to his hometown with emotion after the baptism of the war, looking for the place where the film begins. He told his companion about the years he had spent here, nostalgic and sad. In particular, the sight of the parade of believers holding torches reminded him of the cruel war. At last, he decided to run away. It snowed heavily and he asked for a taxi and promised to take an old man back to his hometown. However, the ruins of the war left the elderly homeless. The car broke down in the snow and he had to board the train and move on. In Sarajevo, accompanied by the director of the Film Museum, he failed to find the silent film, but fell in love with the curator's daughter at first sight. He entered the social circle in a high profile, only to find that it had been imbued with the culture of the former Soviet Union, singing Katyusha melodies everywhere. He had seen Lenin's statue removed and his heart filled with mixed feelings. The film won the jury Award at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival.
