The story takes place in the busy metropolis of Chicago. Victoria (Katherine Turner Kathleen Turner) is a powerful private investigator who loves her job and enjoys good reviews in the industry. Victoria has been in love with her boyfriend Murray (Jay Sanders Jay O. Sanders) for many years, but the latter has shown no desire to spend the rest of his life with her. By chance, Victoria met a man named Bernard (Stephen Meadows) in a bar. The emotionally unhappy Victoria was soon attracted by the gentle Bernard, and the two came together. However, to the surprise of Victoria, Bernard entrusts his daughter Kate (Angela Gottars Angela Goethals) to himself. Although Bernard claims that he only needs to be away for a few days, it is clear that he has decided never to return.
