Plot: this is a strange story. The painter John and his wife Alma live on a desolate island. The painter is often troubled by grotesque dreams. When he wakes up, he always draws his dreams in a sketchbook. The wife met an elven old woman one day and urged her to read John's diary. After reading it, she discovered her husband's secret. Later, the owner of the castle described in the diary, Mekan, invited them to visit. In the castle, Alma found that these people had appeared in her husband's sketchbook. On the way home, Alma begged her husband to stay away from the people, but the painter left without a word. When he returned home, the painter admitted to his wife that he had killed a child on the edge of the cliff. the next day, the mysterious visitor in the castle returned to John's house and seduced John to come to the castle again. Alma was in vain to find John outside the castle, but she found his belongings and lost him forever. Behind-the-scenes production: the film combines thrillers with surreal elements to show the internal relationship between artistic creation and madness. It is the only horror film directed by Bergman. With their superb performances, the two protagonists show the pain of psychological distortion, which is very shocking.
