We Hold the Line (2020)

At present, democracy in many countries in the world is being persecuted from within, and in some countries, democracy is even dying. In the Philippines in Asia, journalist Maria Ressa led the news platform Rappler team to defend democracy against President Duterte. In his war on drugs, thousands of people died at the hands of special forces and the country fell into Duterte's dictatorship. Maria, the last female guardian of this unjust battle, was named time magazine's person of the year in 2018 for her insistence on defending democracy. The truth, first-class journalistic literacy and goodness are her defense shield. She became the target of the government's legal smear and was imprisoned twice. Duterte used social media and the law as weapons to control the country, and Facebook troops searched her online and in real life to silence her. The production team spent more than a year filming Maria and her team, targeting threats and working behind the scenes. Through the victims, key political figures in hiding and members of the firing squad, Duterte is depicted.
