The film is adapted from James Canon's best-selling novel Tales From the Town of Widows, about a group of women living in small mountain villages in Latin America, led by Ava Longoria Parker. When the men went to take part in the Patriotic War, they had to support the whole family on their own, but when the men returned from the battlefield, the women refused to take a back seat. Then a war over "family power" began.
