Scott, 15, lives in a small town in Texas with her sister Lulu and great-grandmother. In order to take care of Lulu, Scott often skipped classes and became a high school dropout. An accident caused a visit by officials from the Department of Child Welfare. Lulu's biological father was forced to come forward and take Lulu by force. Scott had to turn to Sam, who lives in a nearby nursing home, and persuaded him to fly over the cuckoo nest and embark on a road trip from Texas to New York, almost across the United States, and they decided to take back Lulu at all costs.
