At the height of the Cold War in 1979, Gunter (David Klaus David Kross) and Peter (Friedrich Friedrich M ü cke) in East Germany spent more than two years planning a "sensational escape" in pursuit of freedom: they made a huge hot air balloon with limited resources and planned to use it to take their families to West Germany. Unexpectedly, just as it was about to cross the border, the hot air balloon accidentally crashed, causing an overwhelming investigation by the East German secret police. Under the tight time and close investigation, they desperately built new hot air balloons, and at the same time, the secret police gradually locked them down, and a desperate escape against the clock began.
